Are You Ready to Teach Abroad?
Updated 24 April 2009
Teaching abroad isn’t just about being a good teacher. It’s about being an easy-going, flexible and adaptable person. Living in a different country is stressful and you need to have certain characteristics to make it. Some things that will help you adjust to life in another country can be found below. In addition to the useful info you can find below, check out these questions you should consider before thinking about teaching abroad.● Sense of humour
● Easy-going
● Flexible
● Team player
● Optimistic
● Adaptable
● Interest in learning about new cultures, customs, and languages
● Enjoy travelling
● Able to be away from friends and family for an extended period of time
● Like adventure, the unknown and trying new things
● Enjoy teaching
● Able to spend time by yourself, don't mind being alone.
Having these abilities are key to enjoying teaching abroad. If the above descriptions sound a lot like you, then teaching in another country will be something that you enjoy.
Your attitude is just as important as your teaching ability. If an employer doesn’t think that you will be able to overcome culture shock, they may not hire you. Culture shock is a normal part of moving abroad, and there are ways to face it. Everyone suffers from culture shock, but those who don’t end up overcoming it often end up breaking contract and going home.
Moving to a job in a different city is hard enough, just think what it’s like to move to another country where you can’t speak the language and may not even be able to read. Even if you do know the language, there will be customs that you aren’t familiar with.
If this sounds daunting, then maybe going abroad isn’t right for you at this moment. But if this sounds like a wonderful opportunity, then start sending out your CV! Find links for jobs in the Job Sites article.
